Electrical Wiring Accessories Testing
Flexible cables and building wires are a fundamental part of wiring systems and equipment safety. In general, all installation accessories, such as switches, socket outlets, plugs, cords and lampholders are declared articles and must comply with Australian standards and be approved before sale.
In particular any flexible cord and plug for connection of appliances and other equipment, must be tested and approved whether it is used with a piece of equipment that is declared or not. For instance, a computer is not declared but the plug and cord used to connect it is declared and it is an offence to sell the computer with an unapproved cord set.
The Australian general purpose plug is a three pin flat pin plug rated at 10 Amps. It is a declared article which must comply with AS/NZS 3112. Flexible cords must comply with AS/NZS 3191. There is some recognition of supply flexible cords complying with IEC 277 also.
