Regulatory Framework in Australia
Depending on the particular market sector, electrical products sold in Australia fall under several regulatory bodies. The manufacturer or supplier in Australia is responsible for the initial and ongoing compliance with the particular requirements. Domestic, commercial and light industrial equipment falls under both state and federal regulations. In each state an electrical safety regulator has responsibility for policing the safety of products for sale.
The regulations are uniform from state to state and a central committee monitors the status of regulations so that acceptance in one state automatically covers regulations in all other states. From January 1999, the Australian Federal Government established an EMC Framework requiring that radio frequency emissions from products be limited. The Framework is regulated by the Australian Communications Authority (click here to visit the ACA WEB site) Products are required to bear their C-tick mark to indicate compliance.
Electromedical and therapeutic products are a special case which are regulated by the Therapuetic Goods Administration Agency (click here to visit the TGA WEB site), a federal agency, which lays down special requirements for both safety and EMC.
Certain domestic products are also subject to energy efficiency testing and labelling requirements.
